Tianbing Li |1974 , Born in Guilin, China

An interest in painting started very early for Tianbing Li, who was six years old when he began to learn about traditional Chinese art techniques. In 1997, he left China to settle in Paris where he obtained a degree from the École des Beaux-Arts. Influenced by the typically Chinese methods of ink painting, this artist creates work that focuses on the passing of time, using old photographs of his own family, modifying the characters and the colours. In creating characters with a hybrid identity, his portraits reflect both the classical Chinese Taoist philosophy that views art as the means of communicating a mystery, and the political issues surrounding the 'only child' in China.

The artist, who lives in Paris, won the first award for the Biennale d'Issy-les-Moulineaux in 2003, the first Prix Marin in 2004, and exhibits his work in France and abroad.
