Makoto Saito |1952 , Born in Fukuoka, Japan

Initially a designer, Makoto Saito first exhibited his graphic work in 1980, while also experimenting with painting. It was his major exhibition at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa in 2008 that established him as an artist. He has adopted a new mode of expression to create his paintings: he selects scenes from films that influenced him as a child, with portraits of famous people, and works over them with layers of fluid and highly pigmented colour.

Makoto Saito's canvases can be seen at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, as well as in London and Tokyo.
