Hanibal Srouji |1957 , Born in Beirut, Lebanon

When the civil war erupted in Lebanon, Hanibal Srouji left his homeland. He was 18 years old when he moved to Canada where he studied at the Fine Arts Concordia University in Montréal, graduating in 1987.

Nostalgia for his country took him back there in 2002; he encountered an atmosphere of ruin and degradation. From then, the artist's canvases began to reflect what he saw, with the work transformed into surfaces that reproduced the damaged buildings, using the colours of post-war Lebanon.
